Job Summary: Responsible for performing a variety of skilled work involved in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical, signals and street light systems and their related equipment.
Scope of Responsibility: Street Light & Traffic Signal Technician I - Incumbent performs most of the duties required of the position at the Street Light & Traffic Signal Technician II level, but is not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercises less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods.
Incumbent is usually supervised while working and work fits an established structure or pattern.
Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.
Street Light & Traffic Signal Technician II - Incumbent is distinguished from Street Light & Traffic Signal Technician I level in that he/she performs the full range of duties as assigned, works independently and exercises judgment and initiative.
Incumbent receives only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and is fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the division.
Under typical circumstances, incumbent has advanced from the Street Light & Traffic Signal Technician I position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Installation, Maintenance & Repair Duties Performs skilled electrical, electronic and signal system maintenance, and repair services and activities for Public Works including lighting systems, street lights, Troubleshoots, locates and repairs circuit and equipment failures; Repair and maintain signal system and street light systems, including all aspects of Street/Traffic maintenance work Performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of, signal and street light systems and related equipment.
Performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of, electrical components utilized for the management of the Storm Water System, Operates a variety of tools and equipment including hand tools, shop tools, testing equipment, vehicular equipment and other specialized equipment used in the installation, servicing, repair and replacement of signal and street light systems and related equipment.
Preventative Maintenance Carries out a preventative maintenance program; performs inspections of signal and street light systems and related equipment; makes recommendations regarding changes in maintenance work procedures.
Project Development Prepares estimates of time and materials needed to perform assigned repairs and maintenance; ensures adequate materials and supplies are available for proper performance of electrical maintenance work; assists in requisitioning and maintaining inventory of equipment, tools, parts, and supplies used in the electrical/instrumentation shop.
Record Maintenance Maintains records of signal and street light maintenance activities; prepares reports as required.
Training Trains and oversees lower level Street Light & Traffic Signal Technicians in proper work methods; trains employees in safety procedures to be followed while working with and around electrical devices.
Trains in both street lights and signal operations.
Duties will also include all aspects of Street/Traffic Division activities such as maintaining winter streets by plowing, removing snow, sanding, de-icing, and snow blowing, storm sewer cleaning, sign maintenance, and any and all other Street/Traffic division duties as assigned.
Performs other duties as assigned Qualifications and Skills Required Qualifications and Skills (all Street Light & Traffic Signal Technician positions): High school diploma or GED State of Montana Class A, Type II CDL with tanker endorsement or must be obtained within ninety (90) days of employment Required Qualifications & Skills for Specific Street Light & Traffic Signal Technician Positions: Street Light & Traffic Signal Technician I: One (1) year related work experience Street Light & Traffic Signal Technician II: Two (2) years’ experience in the installation, maintenance, & repair of the traffic signal equipment International Municipal Signal Association (ISMA) work zone traffic control certification International Municipal Signal Association (ISMA) Traffic Signal Technician I certification Physical Demands and Working Conditions Requires heavy physical effort, moving over 60 pounds, on an intermittent basis (less than 15% of the time).
Requires moderate attention to detail or deadlines on an occasional basis (between 15% and 45% of the time).
Work requires exposure to disagreeable elements, at least one of which are intense, on an occasional basis (between 15% and 45% of the time).
